The Hatch Art House featured artist for May is Helen Mary Beck. She is a mixed media artist working with watercolor on canvas highlighted with embroidery. With a background in art therapy, Helen is passionate about the importance of story-telling in art making. With her unique technique of combining watercolor with embroidery, Helen Mary Beck creates textured paintings that capture the imagery within science, beauty and nature. Beck’s contrast of the unpredictability of her bold watercolor on canvas combined with the meticulous detail of her embroidered patterns gives her work a striking individuality.
Helen’s work will be showcased May 1st-31st with her artist reception coinciding with MMoCA’s Gallery Night, May 2nd from 5-9pm.

The Hatch Art House featured artist for April is paper mache sculpture, Steve Wirtz. Titled: “TAXidermy” in honor of the dreaded tax due date, April 15th, Steve has created trophy like, paper mache animal sculptures using old tax forms. In Steve’s words: “Finishing my taxes for the year is like landing a big fish, or bagging a big game trophy. It’s an accomplishment. They say nothing is certain except death and taxes. Well, I say all I know is life and taxes, because no animals were harmed in the making of this exhibit. I hope you enjoy it, and many happy returns.”
The artist reception will be Friday, April 11th 6-9pm and the exhibit will run from April 1st to April 30th.

I’m also honored to be the judge for the Art Fair Off the Square this year! It is put on by the Wisconsin Alliance of Artists and Craftspeople (WAAC). All the artists involved must live in Wisconsin…just like HATCH! This is happening July 13th and 14th. I’ll be there on Saturday with my clipboard in hand; please say hello if you see me:)
The June featured artist is Mark Evans, gelatin (monotype) print artist. Most recently, Mark has been exploring relief printing. His latest body of work is executed using a gelatin plate, creating abstract and mildly representational monoprints. Gelatin printing is a form of monoprinting in which a gelatin slab is used as a printing `plate’ in conjunction with standard water soluble printing inks to create images. Very little pressure is required to make monoprints using this technique – no presses required.
Mark will have his work showcased at Hatch Art House from June 1st-30th with an artist reception Friday, June 14th from 6-9pm. Refreshments and good times will be served.

Also, on Friday June 21st, the summer solstice, Hatch will be host to 6 different musicians during Make Music Madison, a city-wide event! To see who’s playing and at which time search for Hatch under Venue on their website. June 21st also happens to be the deadline for entry for the EcoSculpt Art Show! That gives you 2 weeks to make a sculpture! (or 3). I put together a Pinterest page of ideas and here is the EcoSculpt info. The show will run for the month of July.

Welcome to March! A month full of weather ups and downs, winter and spring, snow and rain, but also full of hope and sunshine, chirping birds and spring flowers!
Join us to celebrate the hopeful onset of SPRINGTIME with a fun evening at HATCH! Rosy Hawbaker is our featured artist and her artist reception is Friday, March 8th from 6-9pm. There will be adult beverages served and good times, too:)
The March featured artist is Madison designer and screen printer, Rosy Hawbaker of RosyMade Designs. Rosy has a passion for reusing and refreshing thrift store t-shirts and other items with quirky and fun screen printed designs… creating a “new” item.
Rosy says; “I figured out a way to combine my love of thrifting, art and recycling, and now I truly am in love with the work that I am producing. The majority of the work that I produce is made of recycled materials, so you can look cute, feel comfortable, and help the environment.”
Rosy will be showcasing her work at Hatch from March 1-31st.
2012 was kind of a big year for Hatch. I learned a ton and we grew a lot! We now have 43 artists, up from the 20 we started with back in December of 2010. Twice as many artists means twice as much work…so thank you for being patient with me while I figure out how to achieve a nice balance (and maybe get a bit more help!). I am THRILLED with the way Hatch is growing! So many people are embracing the ‘shop local’ culture and are happy to have us here on Willy Street. That being said; I THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for supporting Hatch and every artist in the shop!
To kick off the year 2013 we are embarking into the world of themed art shows! For the months of January and February you can stop in and see our small works show; EcoSquared. Artists were given the opportunity to create work between 6″ square to 8″ square while incorporating upcycled materials. All priced between $50-$100. The results are fun, creative and very inspiring! All are available for purchase but we do appreciate pick-up near the end of the show. We’ll be having our opening reception for EcoSquared, Friday, January 11th from 6-9pm. The artists will be available to talk with and we’ll have refreshments on hand. Please join us! Click here for Facebook Event page.
