During the month of December, Hatch Art House will be celebrating their 6th anniversary by showcasing all 50+ Hatch artists with gift giving art for $50 or less. As always, Hatch represents Wisconsin-based artists with the majority from the Madison area. Hatch also has an emphasis on upcycled and recycled material both in artwork and in the shop itself. The artist reception will be Friday, December 9th from 5-9pm. Coinciding with the 2nd Willy Wonderland Holiday Walk! Many local artists will be in attendance to talk about their work. We’ll have sweet treats and festive drinks on hand.
This holiday season, remember to shop small businesses and stay local. Hatch features Wisconsin artists, 90% of which are from the Madison area. When you buy from Hatch you know you are buying local.

The Hatch Art House August featured artist is Madison photographer, Ryan Mense. In Ryan’s words; “I’m a Wisconsinite born and raised, currently residing in the state capitol of Madison. I began capturing photos in the northwoods, which really helps to explain my fascination with nature subjects and landscapes. Now that I’m living in downtown Madison, my work has increasingly become more well-rounded, while still seeking out the small details I grew up looking for.
My goal is to create art that obeys a technical workflow for impeccable quality and refined aesthetics, while also interpreting my subjects in a way that best reflects my feelings and vision. My work comprises of using professional photographic equipment to best capture the scenes that I spend a lot of time searching and waiting for. I process and adjust the images in a way that best expresses the emotion I experienced while on location. Because every detail of the image is explored in processing, the final product is deliberate and fully-realized.”
Ryan will have his photos showcased at Hatch Art House from August 1st-31st with an artist reception Friday, August 8th from 6-9pm. Refreshments will be served.

The August featured artist is photographer, Bethany Helzer. Bethany grew up in the Detroit area, finding herself intrigued by the beautiful architecture of a city in neglect, and wanted to document this “urban decay” before it disappeared. Now living in Madison, her focus has shifted to our city’s new and old architecture as well as the nature that surrounds us.
Bethany will have her work showcased at Hatch Art House from August 1st-31st with an artist reception Friday, August 9th from 6-9pm. Refreshments and good times will be served. Facebook Event Page
We are already into our final few weeks of the EcoSquared Art Show here at Hatch… Our opening reception January 11th was a roaring success with a gallery full of creative and energetic people! Lindsay Christians gave the show quite a boost with her wonderful article in the Arts section of the 77 Square newspaper. Next up is the closing reception this Friday, February 8th from 6-9pm. Stop on by to see what it’s all about! Remember that all art pieces are available for purchase but we do appreciate pick-up near the end of the show. The artists will be available to talk with and we’ll have refreshments on hand. Please join us! Click here for the Facebook Event Page, click on join…then feel free to invite your friends.
Another “happening” this month is the Madison Magazine “Best of 2013” ballots are out. Hatch has been nominated for the best “Art Gallery” category. But we ALSO think we would work well under the “Gift Shop/Specialty Store” category! Write us in next to ‘other’ for that one. Hatch and it’s artists would really appreciate your vote! We’ve worked really hard these past 2 years;) VOTE HERE …The results are announced in the July issue.
It seems that there are a lot of ‘art happenings’ this weekend! Starting with Friday the 13th here at Hatch! 6-9 is the artist reception for photographer Jeremy Sailing. We’ll have ice cold beer and a special summery cocktail available for you.

Next up for the weekend; Art Fair Off the Square, Saturday the 14th 9-6 and Sunday the 15th 10-5. Hatch artist, Steve Wirtz have been selected (Yes, he’s THAT good…) to be their FEATURED ARTIST! Steve makes fun-filled paper mache sculptures (think whimsical animals) and also large wire sculptures. (Look up next time you’re in the shop.) The main thing to remember about this show is that it showcases Wisconsin based artists only. What?! So does HATCH!🙂 http://www.artcraftwis.org/afos.html

Also this Saturday and Sunday we have Art Fair ON the Square. This year I have been chosen as one of the four jurors for this ENORMOUS art fair. Of course, we’ve already completed the task of narrowing down about 1600 applicants to 450 or so. Saturday we will be judging the artists up close and personal for artist awards including “Best of Show”! Funny thing…I haven’t received any fruit baskets yet;) Kidding. Really… This show is filled with amazing talent from around the country. http://www.mmoca.org/events/artfair/Artists.php
