February Featured Artist; Aly Wheeler
The featured February artist for Hatch Art House is Madison ceramics artist, Aly Wheeler. Alison Wheeler grew up in the beautiful Driftless area of southwest Wisconsin. She spent most of her childhood outdoors, climbing trees and working on her parents small organic farm. So naturally, the outdoors is where a lot of her inspiration is found. Her pottery is playful, yet functional. Alison enjoys working with her hands, and finds that every piece created is an individual. She used slip trailing, carving, and hand building techniques to make each piece as unique as possible.

As many of you know, here at Hatch Art House we have a few goals that we strive for on a daily basis.
Mainly, when you buy something from Hatch, you know it’s being produced locally. Our rule is that you must reside in Wisconsin to be a Hatch artist. Although, the majority of our 50+ artists live in the Madison area. We have an emphasis on repurposing, upcycling and recycling… if we can keep things out of the landfill and give it a new life in art, we’ve done a great thing. We strive to offer something for everyone at affordable prices in a casual and creatively-charged environment.
A few years ago, Hatch embarked into the world of hosting art shows! Hatch being a small space, a SMALL WORKS art show seemed appropriate; thus EcoSquared Art Show was born. Also, an upcycling theme along with affordable pricing to continue with the Hatch emphasis. The show will run for the month of January 2016, with an artist reception on Friday, January 8th. The deadline for entry is December 18th. The rest of the dates to know are listed on the calendar above and on the forms below.
The guidelines are listed in the printable forms, which I encourage you to pass on to anyone you think would be interested. This show will be juried mainly to make sure all entries fit into the scheme and follow the guidelines. As well as being a painter and dabbler of many other art forms, I was also a juror for the 2013 Art Fair Off the Square, 2012 MMoCA Art Fair on the Square and the MMoCA 2011 Holiday Art Fair.
If you’ve submitted your artwork to Hatch in the past, I encourage you to enter this show. This is your opportunity to be a Hatch artist! Small SQUARE art works….have fun creating!

August Featured Artist: Photographer Ryan Mense
The Hatch Art House August featured artist is Madison photographer, Ryan Mense. In Ryan’s words; “I’m a Wisconsinite born and raised, currently residing in the state capitol of Madison. I began capturing photos in the northwoods, which really helps to explain my fascination with nature subjects and landscapes. Now that I’m living in downtown Madison, my work has increasingly become more well-rounded, while still seeking out the small details I grew up looking for.
My goal is to create art that obeys a technical workflow for impeccable quality and refined aesthetics, while also interpreting my subjects in a way that best reflects my feelings and vision. My work comprises of using professional photographic equipment to best capture the scenes that I spend a lot of time searching and waiting for. I process and adjust the images in a way that best expresses the emotion I experienced while on location. Because every detail of the image is explored in processing, the final product is deliberate and fully-realized.”
Ryan will have his photos showcased at Hatch Art House from August 1st-31st with an artist reception Friday, August 8th from 6-9pm. Refreshments will be served.
