Artists At Work – Meet our Employee Artists!

Artists at Work 2025 is our third year hosting a show highlighting our employee artists. We’ve showcased some amazing employee artists and this year is no different!

AAW 2025 features the work of Tammy Schreiter, Erin Kessler, Anna Koehne, Maeve Krause, and Wilbur Ross. Keep reading to learn more about us, in our own words!

And be sure to stop in to view the show during its run for the month of May, with an Artist Reception hosted on Spring Gallery Night, Friday May 16th from 5-9pm.

Tammy Schreiter | Owner/Curator

Art was my sanctuary growing up, and after college, I realized I was looking for a purpose, not just a job. I dreamed of a welcoming environment that supported local artists and made art accessible to everyone, leading to the creation of Hatch Art House. Opening Hatch was a leap of faith, but it was when I realized I had found my purpose. Every day, I get to work with talented artists, connect with the community, and see the impact that art can have on peopleโ€™s lives. Looking back, I see that my purpose was always there, waiting to be discovered. It just took time, reflection, and the courage to follow my passion.

Erin Kessler | Assistant Manager

I grew up in the Twin Cities/northwestern Wisconsin spending most of my time exploring the woods and nearby parks and thatโ€™s where my deep love for the outdoors began. After a few years in Chicago for college where I minored in Studio Art, I moved back to Wisconsin to be able to spend more time outside and focus on my art.

I illustrate gardens, plants, and landscapes, and sometimes ghosts, in watercolor and gouache. All of my work is heavily inspired by nature and the joy I get from wandering around outside. My favorite thing about making art is trying to find and highlight the wonder in simple scenes.

Anna Koehne | Gallery Assistant

Our next employee artist feature is Anna Koehne! Anna is one of our trusty gallery assistants, and she creates intricate abstract drawings in ink on paper. Artists at Work showcases a number of her detailed drawings, available as originals and framed prints. Anna doesnโ€™t often get time to make art, but when she does she creates beautifully atmospheric pieces using just black ink and simple lines.

Maeve Krause | Gallery Assistant

Maeve Krause is another one of our wonderful Gallery Assistants and the jewelry artist behind Blooming Buds Jewelry. Maeve creates unique pieces made with dried flowers and resin, paired with brass accents and glass beads. Each pair of earrings is unique and makes a fantastic addition to your jewelry collection. Maeve will be showcasing a selection of new jewelry for Artists at Work.

Wilbur Ross | Gallery Assistant

Animals and nature have always been a common theme in my art, but I didnโ€™t truly begin to understand the depths of it until I studied them from life in my scientific illustration courses in college. Thereโ€™s always so much to look at, even in the most minute of details, and I enjoy trying to capture that life in my work.

I love working with unexpected colors, layering and mixing my mediums to create a richness and depth that evokes feeling rather than complete accuracy.  For me, art is about the process, not the end product.  My sketch lines are just as important as the final brush stroke, which is why you’ll find early guide lines or unclean edges in some of my pieces.  My goal is to bring the viewer into the art with me, and hope that they experience the same awe and wonder as I did during its creation.  My hope is to bring more acknowledgement of nature in such an urban world.

As many of you know, here at Hatch Art House we have a few goals that we strive for on a daily basis.

When you buy something from Hatch, you know itโ€™s being produced locally. Our rule is that you must reside in Wisconsin to be a Hatch artist; although, the majority of our 75+ artists live in the Madison area. ย We have an emphasis on repurposing, upcycling and recyclingโ€ฆ ย if we can keep things out of the landfill and give it a new life in art, weโ€™ve done a great thing. We strive to offer something for everyone at affordable prices in a casual and creatively charged environment.

Aย few yearsย ago, Hatch embarked into the world of hosting art shows! Hatch being a small space, aย SMALL WORKSย art show seemed appropriate; thus EcoSquared Art Show was born. Also, anย upcyclingย theme along withย affordableย pricing to continue with the Hatch emphasis. ย The show will runย January 6th through February 28th, 2018, with an artist reception on Friday, January 12th. ย The deadline for entry is December 21st.ย The rest of the dates to know are listed on the calendar above and on the forms below.

The guidelines are listed in the printable forms, which I encourage you to pass on to anyone you think would be interested. ย This show will be juried mainly to make sure all entries fit into the scheme and follow the guidelines. As well as being a painter and dabbler of many other art forms, I was also a juror for the 2013 Art Fair Off the Square, ย 2012 MMoCA Art Fair on the Square and the MMoCA 2011 Holidayย Art Fair.

If youโ€™ve submitted your artwork to Hatch in the past, I encourage you to enter this show. This isย yourย opportunity to be a Hatch artist!ย Small SQUARE artworksโ€ฆ.have fun creating!

March Featured Artist; Vicki Liu

Vicki creates work that is vibrant, relatable, and most of all, brings beauty to the subject matter. She uses a vivid color palette, while pushing the work with a simplicity that allows each piece to stand alone, and adding just a bit of untraditional visual interest with design elements throughout.
Vicki states, “Most of my recent work has been saturated in the natural world, of which I’ve always been completely entranced. Whether its a killer whale, or frog legged beetle, I see beauty in all creatures. I try to capture that with a non traditional color palette, adding hints of geometric pattern, or metallic embellishments, to invite the viewer further into each piece.”
Vicki Liu’s paintings will be showcased for the month of March with an artist reception Friday, March 13th from 6-9pm.
